Most people walk into a tire shop for one of two reasons: something went flat, or the tread is finally gone. But a tire counter handles plenty of small jobs that never make the sign out front, and drivers around Montgomery and the River Region tend not to ask for them, mostly because nobody ever told them what those jobs are called.

A service you can’t name is a service you can’t request. According to the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association, whose puncture repair procedures are the standard most shops work from, you should never perform an outside-in or on-the-wheel repair.

  • The tire comes off the wheel. USTMA’s standard is that tires must be removed from the rim and wheel assembly and inspected for all possible damage, including damage to the inner liner.
  • The inside gets inspected. Damage from running a tire low on air isn’t always visible from outside, which is why it has to come off to be judged.
  • The injury gets filled. A rubber stem, or plug, must fill the puncture channel so moisture cannot reach the tire’s belts.
  • The inner liner gets sealed. A patch has to be applied to the inner liner to stop air loss.

Both halves are required. A plug alone isn’t acceptable, and neither is a patch alone. The one-piece combination units many shops use are just a stem and a patch built together.

One related point, because it comes up constantly: if you used a can of aerosol sealant to get off the shoulder, tell the counter. Sealant counts as temporary mobility only, meant to get you to a shop for inspection and possible repair. It isn’t a proper repair.

So when a shop says it needs to pull the wheel to fix a nail hole, that isn’t padding the ticket. That’s the standard.

Ask Whether Your Flat Is Even Repairable, Before Anything Else

This is the question most drivers don’t know they’re allowed to ask. Repairability is not a judgment call: the limits are written down, and any honest Montgomery-area shop can tell you which one your tire ran into.

A tire generally comes back out of the “repairable” column when:

  • The puncture is larger than a quarter inch, or six millimeters, across.
  • The damage sits outside the tread. Repairs are limited to the tread area, and you don’t repair an injury that extends into the shoulder or belt edge, or angles into it. Sidewall punctures are out.

The angle of the nail changes the repair, and that is another thing you cannot see with the wheel on the car.

If your tire lands on the wrong side of those limits, the conversation turns to replacement. That is a fair moment to ask what it will run you, and to ask the shop for a current quote on your specific size rather than trusting a number you read online.

Ask for a TPMS Reset or Relearn After a Rotation, Not Just a Light Cleared

The tire pressure light is the most misunderstood lamp on the dash, and a TPMS reset in Montgomery is one of the more common things drivers ask about after a rotation.

Start with what the system promises. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 138 requires the low pressure lamp to warn you when a tire is 25 percent or more below the manufacturer’s recommended cold pressure.   • OBDII relearn. A scan tool writes the IDs to the module through the OBD port. A 2011 Toyota Camry then wants a short drive around 12 mph for up to five minutes to finish.

Which one applies isn’t up to you or the shop. It is set by the make, model, and year. That is why “can you just reset my light” sometimes takes two minutes and sometimes takes a tool, a procedure, and a road test.

Ask for a Lug Nut Torque Recheck After Any Wheels-Off Job

Any time your wheels come off, for a tire repair, a rotation, or brake work, they go back on to a torque value set by your vehicle’s manufacturer and listed in the owner’s manual. It isn’t the same number on every vehicle, and it isn’t something to guess at with an impact gun.

The request is simple: ask whether they will put a torque wrench back on your lug nuts after you have driven the car a bit. Fasteners can settle once a wheel has been loaded and heat-cycled on the road, and a recheck is quick. It is the easiest job on this list to fold into a visit for something unrelated, since nothing has to come apart.

Ask for a Seasonal Pressure Set, Not Just a Top-Off

A pressure set means all four tires read the number on your vehicle’s placard, checked properly, rather than air added to whichever one looked saggy. It is one of the most useful things a River Region driver can ask for.

Alabama’s weather is why this is a real service and not a courtesy, and it is the same reason heat is so hard on tire pressure here. USTMA’s figure is that inflation pressure rises in warm weather and falls in cold weather by one to two pounds for every 10 degrees of temperature change. Montgomery averages a January high of 57 with lows around 36, and July and August highs around 92 with lows near 71. Run that swing through the one-to-two-pounds figure: pressures set on a cold January morning are not the pressures you are driving on in August.

Two rules make a pressure set worth having done right. Cold means cold: USTMA says to check tires at least monthly, and to check them cold, meaning parked at least three hours, because a reading taken after a drive across town in Alabama heat is not comparable to the placard number. And the number comes from the vehicle, not the tire: you will find it on a label on the driver’s door or in your owner’s manual.

The federal numbers say this is a real problem, not tidiness. A NHTSA survey found 12.4 percent of passenger vehicles from model years 2004 through 2011 had at least one tire severely underinflated, meaning 25 percent or more below recommended pressure. TPMS helped a great deal, cutting that likelihood by an estimated 55.6 percent. It still isn’t the same as someone putting a gauge on all four.

Ask Them to Check the Valve and the Wheel, Not Only the Tire

A slow leak isn’t automatically a tire problem, which is worth knowing when you’re describing a symptom at the counter.

The first step in the industry repair procedure, before anything comes apart, is to check the tire, the wheel, and the valve for the source of the leak using water or a soap solution. Three possible culprits, and only one is the tire. The valve gets attention at the other end of the job too: when the repair is finished, the assembly is re-inspected for damage and leakage, with particular attention to the repair area, the beads, and the valve.

So if your tire keeps going down a few pounds a week and nothing looks wrong with it, the phrase to use is “can you check the tire, the wheel, and the valve for where it is leaking.” If the fix turns out to be at the valve rather than in the tread, ask the shop for a current quote rather than assuming it is the same conversation as a tread repair.

Which of These Happen While You Wait, and Which Need the Wheel Off

Usually while you wait: a pressure set on all four tires, a soap solution check for a slow leak, a lug nut torque recheck, and a TPMS relearn on vehicles that use a stationary procedure.

Needs the wheel off and a bay: any actual tire and wheel service that starts with a flat repair, since the tire has to come off the rim and be inspected inside; a repairability call on a puncture whose angle cannot be judged from outside; anything at the valve that requires the tire to be unseated; and a relearn that needs a road test to finish.

The pattern: anything needing the inside of the tire is a bay job, and anything needing only a gauge, a wrench, or a sensor tool is a counter job.
