By the middle of August in Montgomery, your tires have been working in an oven for three straight months. Daily high temperatures here average right around 91 degrees in July and rarely drop below the mid-80s, and the asphalt on Zelda Road, the Eastern Bypass, and I-85 holds that heat long after the sun goes down. Commuters coming in from Prattville, work trucks running around Wetumpka, a family car that never leaves a few River Region errands: same story for all of them. Your engine has a cooling system. Your cabin has air conditioning. Your tires have neither. They just absorb it.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration puts it plainly: in the hot summer months, high heat and hot roadways contribute to the breakdown of tires and a greater opportunity for tire failure. That is not a road-trip-only concern. It is a five-month condition in central Alabama, and the checks that protect you against it take about ten minutes in your own driveway.

Here is what the heat is doing inside your tires, why the most common summer “fix” backfires, and what we look at during a pressure and tread check.

Why Does Tire Pressure Go Up in Hot Weather?

Air expands when it gets hot. That is the whole story, and it is measurable. According to the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association, inflation pressure moves about one to two pounds for every 10 degrees of temperature change: up in warm weather, down in cold.

Now stack the Alabama variables on top of each other:

  • Morning to afternoon swing. Set your pressure before sunrise, then read it again after a July afternoon near 91 degrees. The gauge will have moved, and that alone is worth a pound or two.
  • Pavement heat. Asphalt in direct sun runs far hotter than the air above it. An EPA-cited pilot study in Arizona measured conventional paving hitting 152 degrees at midday. Alabama asphalt is not Arizona asphalt, but the surface your tires ride on is far hotter than your weather app says.
  • Friction from driving. A rolling tire flexes hundreds of times a minute, and flexing rubber makes its own heat on top of everything the road is adding.

So a driver who sets all four tires to the placard number at 6 a.m. in a Cloverdale driveway, then checks again at 4 p.m. after a run out I-85, will see a gauge reading several pounds higher. Nothing is broken, and that is the reason the next section exists.

Why Bleeding Air Out of a Hot Tire Is Backwards

This is the most common mistake we see in July and August, and careful people make it while trying to do the right thing.

The number on the sticker inside your driver’s door is a cold inflation pressure. Cold does not mean winter. It means the vehicle has sat out of the sun long enough for the tires to settle to the temperature around them, which USTMA defines as at least three hours. Every recommendation your automaker makes assumes you measured under those conditions.

Picture that same driver. The gauge reads high in the afternoon heat, so they pull into a gas station on Atlanta Highway and let air out until it matches the placard. It feels responsible. But overnight the tires cool and shed the pressure the heat had added, and now all four sit below the number the vehicle was engineered around.

That is not a harmless rounding error, because underinflation is a heat problem in its own right. USTMA is direct about it: under inflated tires generate excessive heat build-up and stress, causing irregular wear and internal damage. NHTSA’s crash research says the same thing from the other side, noting that pressure below the recommended level can cause high heat generation, which in turn causes rapid tire wear and blowout.

You bled air out to protect the tire from heat, and the result is a tire that makes more heat than it did before. The well-meant fix creates the failure.

The rule for tire pressure in hot weather is simple: set it cold, then leave it alone. A high reading on a hot tire is the system working, not a warning.

What Underinflation Really Does to a Tire in Summer

If it seems like we are making a lot of a few pounds of air, the crash data backs it up.

  • NHTSA’s Crash Causation Survey found a tire issue present before the crash in 1 out of every 11 crashes, roughly 9 percent. The issues included tread separations, blowouts, bald tires, and underinflation.
  • When tires are underinflated by 25 percent or more, they are three times as likely to be cited as a critical event in the moments before a crash. About 10 percent of tires that far down were on vehicles that had a pre-crash tire problem, against 3.4 percent of correctly inflated tires.
  • This is not a rare condition. A NHTSA study found 12 percent of U.S. passenger vehicles from model years 2004 through 2011 had at least one tire underinflated by at least 25 percent.

One more thing should change how much you trust your dashboard: a tire pressure monitoring system only has to warn you at 25 percent under inflated. That is a late alarm, and USTMA says outright it is no replacement for monthly checks with a gauge.

Tire Blowout Prevention: How Heat Turns a Worn Tire Into a Failure

Pressure is only half of tire blowout prevention. The other half is the condition of the rubber itself, and heat attacks that too.

Heat accelerates aging. All rubber breaks down over time, and NHTSA notes that heat speeds the process up. Tires age whether you drive them or not, so a low-mileage second vehicle or a work truck parked on a River Region job site is not automatically in good shape. Here is the part that catches people off guard: a tire can have plenty of tread left and still have compromised integrity, and aging may not be visibly detectable. Some manufacturers recommend replacement at six to ten years old regardless of tread wear, spare included. An analysis of 2005 to 2007 crash data estimated 90 people die and another 3,200 are injured each year in crashes where tire aging was a factor.

Worn tread multiplies the risk. A new car tire starts life with 10/32 to 11/32 of an inch of tread, and the practical replacement point is 2/32. NHTSA found about 26 percent of tires in the 0 to 2/32 range were on vehicles with a tire problem before the crash, against only 8 percent of tires at 3/32 to 4/32. Those last couple thirty-seconds are doing real work.

Then the two combine. An aged, thin-tread tire carrying a family and a loaded trunk, on baking pavement at highway speed heading down to Gulf Shores, is the recipe for a tread separation. Any one factor alone is usually survivable. Stacked, they are the failure we get called about from the shoulder of the interstate.

The Summer Tire Checks Montgomery Drivers Miss

None of this needs tools you do not already have. It needs doing on the right schedule, in the right condition.

  • Check cold, at least monthly. First thing in the morning, before you drive anywhere, or after the vehicle has sat at least three hours out of the sun. A reading taken after a trip to Publix is not a cold reading.
  • Use a real gauge, not your eyes. A radial tire can be significantly low and still look fine. Kicking it tells you nothing.
  • Do not wait for the light. It triggers at 25 percent under, and you want to catch a problem long before that.
  • Look for cracking, bulges, and cuts. USTMA recommends inspecting for irregular tread wear, cracking, scrapes, bulges, cuts, punctures, and embedded objects. Fine sidewall cracking is heat and age showing themselves.
  • Do the penny test. Insert a penny upside down into a tread groove. If part of Lincoln’s head is covered, you still have tread. If his whole head is visible, you are at or near 2/32 and it is time to shop.
  • Read the date code. The last four digits of the Tire Identification Number on the sidewall give the week and year the tire was built. “2619” means the 26th week of 2019.
  • Do not forget the spare. It ages in the trunk, and the shoulder of the Bypass is a bad place to learn it is flat.
  • Account for load before a trip. Luggage, a cooler, and four passengers change what the tires are asked to do, and some placards list a separate loaded pressure.
