You did the hard part already. You found the size your vehicle actually calls for, you know the load and speed rating it needs, and now there are three tires sitting in front of you that all fit. They are not the same price, they are not the same brand, and the person across the counter is waiting on an answer.
So what separates them?
There is a code molded into the sidewall of every one of those tires that answers a good chunk of that question, and in our years running a tire shop in Montgomery AL, hardly anyone has ever asked us about it. It is a number followed by two letters. Something like 640 A B. That is the Uniform Tire Quality Grading code, usually shortened to UTQG, and it is three separate grades stacked together: treadwear, traction, and temperature.
Here is what each one actually measures, what it does not measure, and how to put all three to work the next time you buy tires in Montgomery AL.
The three marks nobody reads on the side of a tire
Find the sidewall lettering on a tire in your driveway and look for the word TREADWEAR, or just a bare three-digit number followed by one or two letters. On a new tire the same information is usually on a label stuck to the tread face.
Federal regulation 49 CFR 575.104 is what puts it there. The rule requires the grades to be permanently molded into or onto the sidewall, and requires that label on the tread surface of new tires. It is required disclosure, not marketing copy.
The three parts, in the order they appear:
- Treadwear. A number, always a multiple of 20, describing relative wear rate.
- Traction. A letter: AA, A, B, or C, from highest to lowest.
- Temperature. A letter: A, B, or C, from highest to lowest.
Three grades, three completely different tests. Most of the confusion we hear at the counter, from drivers in Montgomery, Prattville, Wetumpka and Millbrook alike, comes from treating them as one overall quality score. They are not.
Who actually assigns these grades? It is not the government
Under the regulation, the party that provides the grading information is the tire manufacturer, or where a tire is sold under a brand name, the brand-name owner. The federal government’s role is different. NHTSA sets and monitors the test conditions, maintains the test course, and supplies the monitoring tires that candidate tires get measured against.
So the company that made your tire did the testing and assigned the grade, working inside a procedure the government wrote and polices. NHTSA audits for overstatement, so a manufacturer that claims more than its testing supports has a problem. A manufacturer that assigns itself a lower grade than its results would justify does not. That happens, and it is one reason two similar tires from two different companies can carry numbers that do not line up.
None of that makes the grades useless. It means they are strongest as a comparison within one manufacturer’s own product line, and softer as a comparison across brands.
What a UTQG treadwear rating really tells you: a comparison, not a mileage promise
The treadwear grade is the one people think they understand. A 640 lasts longer than a 440. Bigger number, longer life. Buy the bigger number.
That is close enough to be dangerous.
The grade comes from running a candidate tire on a government test course that is roughly 400 miles in length, located near San Angelo, Texas, after a break-in of two circuits of the test roadway. The tire’s wear rate gets measured against the course monitoring tires, and the resulting grade is expressed in multiples of 20, so 80, 120, 160, and on up.
Two things follow, and both matter more than the number itself.
It is a ratio, not a mileage figure. A 640 does not mean 64,000 miles. It means that tire wore at a certain rate relative to a reference tire on one stretch of Texas road. Your commute up the Eastern Bypass, your gravel driveway outside Prattville, and the way you take the curve onto Zelda Road are not that course.
A small gap is not a gap. If one tire reads 500 and another reads 480, that difference tells you almost nothing, because two different companies assigned those two numbers using their own testing. A hundred-point spread within the same brand’s lineup is a real signal. A twenty-point spread across brands is noise.
And here is the part that surprises people: a high UTQG treadwear rating usually means a harder tread compound. Harder rubber wears more slowly, and it also tends to give up some grip on wet pavement. Which brings us to the second letter.
We should also say plainly that no treadwear grade saves a tire from a mechanical problem. We have seen drivers buy a 700-treadwear tire and wear it out early anyway, because the actual cause was an alignment issue or a rotation that never happened. If your last set wore out faster than it should have, the grade on your next set is not the fix.
Traction: one narrow test, widely misread
The traction grade runs AA, A, B, C from highest to lowest, and it measures exactly one thing: how well the tire stops in a straight line on wet pavement, tested on both wet asphalt and wet concrete.
That is it. The test excludes cornering, hydroplaning resistance, acceleration, and dry-surface performance entirely. The regulation’s own required label text says the grade is based on straight-ahead braking traction tests and does not include cornering.
Read that again with an August afternoon in the River Region in mind. When a thunderstorm dumps on I-85 and you come off the ramp onto standing water in a curve, you are asking the tire for cornering grip and hydroplaning resistance, two things the traction letter never tested. An AA tire is genuinely better at stopping straight on a wet road than a B tire. It is not certified to be better at the maneuver that scares you most.
Treat the traction letter as a wet-braking score, not a wet-weather score.
Temperature: heat margin, and why the River Region spends it
The temperature grade is the one we care about most for local drivers, and the one most often described wrong online.
It is not a rating of how much outside heat a tire can take.
What it actually measures is heat the tire makes itself, and how well it gets rid of it. The tire is conditioned at 95 degrees, loaded to 88 percent of its maximum rated load, and then run on an indoor test wheel: 250 rpm for two hours, then 375 rpm for thirty minutes, then in higher steps of 25 rpm, thirty minutes each. A tire that cannot finish the 500 rpm stage is graded C. One that finishes 500 is a B. One that finishes 575 is an A.
Faster and faster, under load, until something gives.
Why does that matter in Montgomery? Because heat load on a tire is cumulative. The casing does not care where the heat came from. Air temperature, pavement temperature, road speed, vehicle load, and inflation pressure all pour into the same total, and the temperature grade is a measure of how much margin the tire’s construction has for shedding that total before its materials start to suffer.
Our starting point here is high. July daily highs in Montgomery average around 91 degrees and rarely exceed 97. That is the air. Dark asphalt runs far hotter than the air above it. In one study of conventional asphalt pavement under summer conditions, the road surface hit about 123 degrees while the air at the same hour was about 94, a gap of roughly 28 degrees.
Now stack the rest of it. A loaded vehicle at Eastern Bypass and I-85 speeds, in August, on pavement like that, is adding speed heat and load heat on top of a surface already running well above air temperature. A commute in from Wetumpka or Millbrook at highway speed with a full vehicle is the everyday version of that stack. The same tire doing the same errands somewhere mild starts the day with more headroom than it does here.
And the cheapest way to throw away whatever margin you have is low pressure. The U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association is direct about it: insufficiently inflated tires generate excessive heat build-up and stress, which causes irregular wear and internal damage. Two tires, same size, different sticker: the comparison in practice
Put two real tires side by side. Same size, both correct for the vehicle.
- Tire A: 640 A B
- Tire B: 440 AA A
Shopping on the first number alone, Tire A wins by a mile. Read all three marks and the picture inverts.
Tire A claims a much longer relative wear rate, but its wet braking and its heat margin are each graded one step lower. Tire B gives up meaningful tread life to take the top wet-braking grade and the top temperature grade.
That trade is not an accident. The harder, longer-wearing rubber that earns a big treadwear number is often the same rubber that grips a little less on a wet road.
So which is right? It depends on the vehicle and the driving, which is the whole reason this conversation belongs at a counter and not in a spec sheet.
- The high-mileage interstate commuter. Steady highway miles, up to Birmingham and back, moderate loads. Tire A’s wear advantage adds up over the years, and steady highway running is not the worst case for either letter.
- Short trips, city stop-and-go, summer downpours. Errands around Montgomery, school runs out to Pike Road, afternoon storms. Tire B’s grades are doing work every week, while the wear advantage matters less because the miles accumulate slowly.
- The loaded work truck, or a small fleet of them. Heavy loads on hot city pavement all summer. Heat margin and wet braking are the grades to protect, and a hard compound that gives both up is a poor trade.
That is why we would rather look at your vehicle and hear about your week than tell you a number to shop for.
Which tires carry no grades at all
Several categories are exempt from UTQG grading altogether. Deep tread winter-type snow tires, space-saver and temporary-use spare tires, tires with rim diameters of 12 inches or less, and limited production tires made in very small annual volumes.
A missing code on one of those is not a red flag. A missing code on a standard passenger tire is worth a question.
The questions to ask when you buy tires in Montgomery AL
Size, load rating, and speed rating come first, always. Once those are settled, the UTQG code turns into a short list of questions:
- What did this tire trade to get its treadwear number? A high number with lower traction and temperature letters is telling you where the engineering went.
- Are we comparing within one brand or across brands? Within a lineup, the treadwear numbers are a fair ranking. Across brands, a small gap means very little.
- What is the temperature grade, given what I actually do? Highway miles in August, heavy loads, or a long daily run on hot pavement are the cases where that letter earns its keep.
- What is the traction letter, and what does it not cover? Wet straight-line braking only, so ask what else the tire is known for in the rain.
- What are the treadwear and warranty terms behind the number? The grade is a test result. The written mileage warranty is a separate commitment, and they are not the same thing.
