Most people bring us a feeling, not a diagnosis. The car “doesn’t feel tight anymore.” It wanders a little on I-85. There’s a clunk from the front end when you cross the tracks. The steering wheel has a small dead spot in the middle that wasn’t there last year.
And more often than not, the request that comes with that feeling is: can you align it?
Sometimes, yes. But an alignment is a geometry job. It sets the angles your wheels sit at, and it does that beautifully when every joint holding those wheels is tight. When one of those joints is worn, an alignment doesn’t fix the problem. It measures around it, and the problem comes right back.
This post is about the parts that sit upstream of an alignment: tie rod ends, ball joints, control arm bushings, sway bar links, and wheel bearings. They’re the reason a car feels vague or noisy, and the most common reason a driver starts looking for steering and suspension repair in Montgomery, AL.
What “Loose Steering” Actually Feels Like From the Driver’s Seat
“Loose” is really three different complaints, and telling them apart in your own driveway gets you most of the way to an answer.
- Wander. The car doesn’t hold a lane on its own. You’re making constant small corrections at highway speed on I-85 or the Southern Bypass, and you blame the crown of the road or a crosswind.
- Play. At parking-lot speed, the wheel moves a little before the tires do. There’s a soft, dead spot in the center. That’s loose steering in the literal sense: measurable looseness in the steering linkage.

Those three feel similar from the driver’s seat and come from different parts. That’s why the fix starts with an inspection rather than with a guess.
Why an Alignment Cannot Fix a Worn Joint
An alignment machine measures where your wheels are pointed and tilted, and a technician adjusts them to the manufacturer’s specification. To do that, it has to assume the parts holding the wheel are solid. The rack reads the position of the wheel at that moment, with no load on it and no weight transferring in a turn.
Put a worn joint in that assembly and the assumption breaks. A joint with play in it lets the wheel move. So the technician sets a perfect number, the car rolls off the rack, and the first time the suspension loads up in a corner or under braking, the wheel takes a slightly different position than the one it was set to. The alignment was never wrong. It just wasn’t holding still.
None of this makes alignment a bad service. On a healthy car it’s one of the best things you can do for your tires. This isn’t a judgment call, either. Federal in-use vehicle inspection standards put an actual number on it: free play in the steering linkage shall not exceed one-quarter of an inch. The same standard limits how much lash a steering wheel is allowed at the rim, from two inches on a wheel 16 inches or less across, up to two and three-quarter inches on a 22-inch wheel. A quarter inch of slop in a linkage joint isn’t a quirk your car developed with age. It’s a defect with a published threshold.

Six months later the inside edges of the front tires are feathered again and it looks like the alignment “didn’t take.” It took fine. The joint moved.

Tie Rod Ends
Tie rods are the direct link between your steering rack and your front wheels. There’s an inner and an outer on each side, and both are ball-and-socket joints that pivot every mile you drive.
When a tie rod end wears, the socket develops clearance, so the rack can move a little without the wheel following. That’s where loose steering and the center dead spot come from. Worn tie rod ends also let toe angle change as the suspension loads, so the car wanders and the tires scrub sideways.
Signature symptom: vague steering, wander at speed, and feathered tire wear.
Ball Joints
Ball joints connect your control arms to the steering knuckle. They carry the vehicle’s weight while letting the wheel steer and travel up and down at the same time, and they are the most safety-critical joint in the front end.
NHTSA recall 24V-479, filed against front lower control arm ball joints, describes the defect as the ball joint on either side separating from the suspension. The stated consequence is a loss of steering control that can lead to an accident. That is where a worn joint is slowly heading.
Federal suspension inspection criteria also require that ball joint seals not be cut or cracked. Once the boot tears, the grease escapes and road grit gets in, and the joint’s remaining life gets very short.
Signature symptom: a clunk over bumps, sometimes a creak on low-speed turns, and uneven tire wear.
Control Arm Bushings
The control arm bolts to the vehicle through rubber bushings, which allow controlled movement while soaking up small vibrations. Rubber is the one part of your suspension guaranteed to age whether you drive or not. Alabama heat and years of load cycles crack it, and a cracked or extruded bushing lets the control arm shift under load.
The same federal standard requires rubber bushings to be free from cracks or extrusion. A shifting control arm is a moving alignment reference, which is a big reason a car with tired bushings can never quite be aligned into feeling right again.
Signature symptom: wander, a dull clunk over larger bumps, and steering that feels different under braking than under power.
Sway Bar Links
The sway bar ties the left and right sides of your suspension together to limit body roll in a turn, and short links connect it to each side. They’re small parts, not load-bearing the way a ball joint is, and they’re the most common source of a mysterious front-end rattle.
Worn links produce a light knock or clunk on uneven pavement, often only on one side, often only at low speed, and usually absent on smooth road. Those railroad crossings around Montgomery will find a bad link every time. Federal criteria are blunt here, too: stabilizer bars shall be connected.
Signature symptom: a clunking noise over bumps at low speed, with normal steering feel otherwise.
Wheel Bearings

Your Tires Are Keeping a Record
Tires physically record what the suspension has been doing between visits.
- Feathered edges (tread blocks sharp on one side and rounded on the other) usually mean a toe problem, which often means a tie rod.
- Wear concentrated on one edge points to a camber issue, which can come from a worn ball joint or a shifting bushing as easily as from a bad alignment setting.
- Cupping or scalloped patches point at something not controlling wheel motion properly.
