Almost every driver we meet believes the same thing about batteries: cold weather kills them. It’s easy to believe, because the morning your car refuses to start is almost always a cold one. You turn the key, the engine groans, the thermometer says 36 degrees, and the cold gets the blame.

Here’s the part most people never hear. The cold morning didn’t ruin your battery. An Alabama summer did. The damage that ends a battery’s life happens in July and August, quietly, while the car is starting perfectly every day. December is just the month the bill comes due.

A car battery is a chemical device. Lead plates sit in a solution of acid and water, and moving current in or out drives a reaction between them. Like most chemistry, that reaction runs faster when it’s hot.

Faster is not better here. According to Midtronics, which builds professional battery testing equipment, cold only slows those reactions temporarily, and the battery recovers its normal output once things warm back up. Heat does something else entirely. It speeds the reactions up permanently, degrading the plates, driving water out of the electrolyte, and raising the rate at which the battery drains itself while parked.

Two things wear out at once:

  • The grids corrode. The lead framework holding the active material breaks down faster at high temperature, and that structural loss takes the cranking power with it.
  • Water leaves the electrolyte. Heat evaporates it, and a battery with less liquid inside has less surface doing work.

Battery University, the technical reference published by Cadex Electronics, boils the effect down to a rule that is easy to remember and slightly alarming once you do the math: every 8 degrees Celsius, roughly 15 degrees Fahrenheit, of temperature rise cuts the life of a sealed lead acid battery in half. A battery rated for ten years at 77 degrees is down to about five years at 92 degrees, and roughly 30 months at a sustained 106 degrees.

How Hot It Actually Gets Under Your Hood in Montgomery

Why the Failure Still Happens on a Cold Morning

If summer does the damage, why does the no-start almost always happen in December?

Because a cold start is the hardest thing you ask a battery to do all year. Cold thickens engine oil, so the starter works harder to turn the engine over and demands more current. Cold also slows the battery’s own chemistry, so there’s less current available right when more is needed.

The most common way people decide about a battery is arithmetic: it’s four years old, so it’s probably due. That’s a poor answer, because two batteries of the same age in the same climate can be in completely different condition.

State of Charge Versus State of Health

State of charge is what a voltmeter reads. It tells you how full the battery is right now. State of health is how much capacity the battery still has to give. Voltage can’t see that.
